OmegaT 6.0: A Feature-Packed Major Update

The OmegaT Project announces the release of OmegaT 6.0 - the latest version of its free computer-aided translation (CAT) tool designed for professionals. This update introduces a range of new features designed to make the translation process more efficient and effective. OmegaT 6.0 brings 90 new enhancements and 85 bug fixes compared to the 4.3.3 version.

You can see the complete list of new features and bug fixes in this update here: [https://sourceforge.net/p/omegat/code/ci/master/tree/release/changes.txt]. It is a valuable resource for users who want to learn more about OmegaT 6.0:

Improved User Experience

The OmegaT Project surveyed its users to determine an appropriate set of default settings. The results were incorporated in the new defaults selected and implemented in this update.

OmegaT 6.0 comes with a completely rewritten User Manual. This new comprehensive documentation makes it easier for users to understand what each function does and get the most out of the tool. The interface features a new layout optimized for larger screens that opens several panes in the main window by default, as well as clearer text and descriptions in the menus and preferences. This update also introduces new default keyboard shortcuts such as switching from the Notepad (the renamed Notes pane) to the Editor panel, putting the powerful features of OmegaT at the users fingertips.

The daunting regular expressions used in functions such as search and replace, segmentation, and custom tags have been made more accessible thanks to a thoroughly revised appendix and the new \d+ default custom tag, which is a regular expression that matches one or more digits.

Emphasis on Teamwork

Several new features have been added to optimize teamwork and the translation process.

Team projects now offer improved Git and Subversion (SVN) integration, enabling smoother collaboration between team members. OmegaT also offers sturdier team project updates. This enhancement reduces the likelihood of errors and inconsistencies in the final translation, ultimately improving the overall workflow and productivity of the team.

Users who do not need the advanced team features (sharing the full project memory every three minute, and resolution of translation conflicts) will benefit from the ability to set an export folder for project translation memory files. Choosing a shared folder will give provide quick access to past translations.

Modernized Core Functionality

OmegaT 6.0 offers modernized core functionality with the integration of file filters originally developed for the EU Directorate-General for Translation (DGT). These filters streamline the process of working with XLIFF files. It also enhances the user experience by organizing and simplifying the use of extensions.

The newly added StAX filters replace the original XLIFF and Microsoft Office OpenXML filters (which are still available, but marked as “obsolete”).

OmegaT is now developed with Java 11. Users who run OmegaT with a locally installed Java JRE now have to use Java 11.*

Whether you are a new or experienced OmegaT user, these updates are sure to improve your translation experience. Please visit our website: [https://omegat.org/] for more information about OmegaT or to download the software.

The OmegaT Project always welcomes developers, localizers, and users to contribute their experience, knowledge, and insights to the software we release.
